The Port Angeles Light Opera Association and Peninsula College are partnering to produce a series of classes entitled
"Introduction to Theatrecraft"
This series will introduce anyone interested in the theatre to the many crafts that are needed to produce a play or musical. Anyone who is interested in working in the theatre, either on-stage or behind the scenes will learn from these classes. Classes will be taught by theatre professionals; including set designers, set builders, set painters and costume designers among others.
The workshops that will be part of this series are as follows:
Introduction to Theatre Production & Stage Management - 1 day class -
Kelly Lovall
Study & discussion of theatre production & stage
management. Includes an overview of the how theatre works behind the scenes with
a direct focus on the people and their positions. From stage director to stage
manager, and all the designers and technicians that put a show together and make
it run smoothly.
Introduction to Costume Design for the theater (1 day class) - Richard
Stephens
You’ve been asked to help do costumes for a show but don’t know where to
begin? Here is a class to help you! Script analysis, budget considerations,
where to begin, how to organize, these and many more subjects will be covered
with an emphasis on the practical and dangers and pitfalls to avoid.
Introduction to scenery design - 1 day class -
A basic overview of the scenery design process and the steps and
considerations necessary to bring a design to physical fruition on stage. Script
analysis, budgetary concerns and collaboration with the entire production team
are just some of the major process points that will be discussed.
Intro to set construction, (just the flats ma'am) - 1 day
class - PALOA Set shop
Students learn how to frame, mount, size and paint stage flats, the basic
component of stage scenery.
Set Painting - 1 day class - PALOA set shop
Tools, products and application for set painting for the theater. Includes
faux painting for effects, simulation of brickwork, stone, wood and other
surface treatments.
Intro to Stage Lighting - 2 day class - PALOA set shop & PAHS Auditorium
Basic theory and introduction to handling, hanging, rigging of lights.
Course introduces students to stage light fixtures, connectors, cables, gobos,
stage light design and safety.
Intro to Theatrical Make-up - 1 day class - possibly 3 hours
An introduction to theatrical make-up, the various product lines and a
primer on basic application techniques. The pros and cons of cream make-up
verses pancake make-up will be discussed, how to design a make-up plot for your
character and make-up safety. Course work will discuss theatrical lighting,
highlights and shadows, reshaping the face through make-up techniques and will
finish with old age make-up.
Large prop/scenery sculpting - 2 day class -
Learn how to create large props using a variety of different materials and
techniques. Course instruction will emphasize speed, durability, lightness of
weight and most economical means of creating large, expensive looking props such
as statues, sarcophagus, weapons and more. Materials and techniques to be
showcased will include paper mache`, modge podge and rigid wrap plaster.
