The plot

Annie's a peppy orphan whose life at the New York City Municipal Orphanage has grown intolerable, thanks to the gin-guzzling matron Miss Hannigan. Enter billionaire Oliver Warbucks, who has decided to invite a lucky orphan to his home for the Christmas holidays. Warbucks and Annie hit it off and he decides to offer a reward to whoever can prove they are her parents. Miss Hannigan, who has inside information on Annie, concocts a wicked plan to collect the reward using her crooked brother and his dimwitted girlfriend as accomplices. But the scheme is foiled, Warbucks adopts Annie, and along the way, Annie meets a faithful dog and inspires FDR's New Deal.

Principals

The part of Annie was shared by

KAITLIN McDOUGAL 

Kaitlin at 11 years old is already a seasoned veteran of the theater. She attends Olympic Christian School and will be in the 6 th grade this fall. Her musical instruction includes 3 years  of piano & guitar lessons, and 2 years as a member of the Olympic Girls Choir. Her singing career started when she sang a solo for church and pre-school performances when she was four. Kaitlin has been a performer in many Missoula Children's Theater productions, was Mary in the Living Nativity and was an extra in the Sequim High School production of Oklahoma. She loves sports including soccer, snowboarding and softball. She loves to read, hang out with her family and playing with he ten year old sister, Maggie.
 

ANDREA PERLWITZ

An 11 year old, 4 year veteran of the theatre, Andrea has acted in many school performances as well as 2 Missoula Children's Theatre performances. She played the lion in Peninsula Family Theatre's production of The Magical Land of Oz. Andrea is home schooled.


Oliver Warbucks - Warm hearted billionaire

TRENT POMEROY - Music has always been a constant in Trent's life. He has been singing, playing piano and composing music since early childhood. He has played a variety of venues around Western Washington including Lake Stevens Music in the Park and the Westin Hotel in Seattle, as well as The Improv and Dr. Demento Show in Los Angeles. Trent and his music was featured recently on KONP's Art Beat. In 1996, he recorded his first CD of original and traditional piano solos entitled Rain Music.

Being involved in musical theatre has always been an interest for him. He has been part of the cast of several productions including Barbum and had the role of Albert in Bye Bye Birdie. Annie is Trent's first PALOA production. A teacher in Lake Stevens for many years, Trent and his family moved to Port Angeles in the summer of 2000. He is currently teaching at Hamilton Elementary. He gives thanks for all the support, love and tolerance his wife, Pat and children: Bryn, Allegra and Hayden, constantly show towards him.

 

Miss Hannigan - Not so warm hearted orphanage director

OLIVIA SHEA - Olivia has directed seventeen plays and five musicals. and acted in over 40 of them. She has been involved with Olympic Theatre Arts, Port Angeles Players and Spokane Civic Theatre. Olivia is also a member of the Songbirds - a trio performing 1940's songs. She has a degree in elementary education and is an instructor at Children's Summer Arts Camp. Olivia directed My Fair Lady, and played the roll of Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! for PALOA. Last year she directed the PALOA performance of Anything Goes. Her other interests include reading, aerobics and attending plays.

Grace Farrell - private secretary to Oliver Warbucks

SARAH SHEA - This is Sarah's second PALOA production, her first being The King & I, where she played one of the wives. This is also her second time being in Annie. Her first time was during her freshman year of high school where she played the "NYC Star To Be" in the operetta. Since then she has performed with numerous choirs, her favorite being Western Washington Universities Jazz Ensemble. This August she will be spending a week in California at a jazz camp as a scholarship recipient for voice. She has also been in many theatrical productions. While at Western, she acted in a play that traveled to different colleges across Western Washington. She is thrilled to be in this year's Annie production for PALOA for many reasons. One reason is that she will be sharing the stage with her mother, Olivia, for the first time. She plans to pursue a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in music.

Rooster - Miss Hannigan's no-good brother

GAVIN McLEAN - Gavin is an 18-year-old PALOA veteran and graduate of Sequim High School. He has been in many theatrical productions for 8 years, from Sequim High School, to OTA and PALOA, His last two leading roles  were as Steve Crandall in Broadway, and Father in Flowers for Algernon. He gained his dance experience as an apprentice for Kathy & Tam Moore of Pioneer Dance Arts. He has experience in dance, singing, acting and now takes on the role of Assistant Choreographer for Annie, as well as playing the Part of Rooster. He hopes to become a performing arts teacher in high school.

 


Lily - Rooster's not-so-bright girlfriend

AMANDA BACON - Amanda's first solo was at age 2 1/2 at the Sequim Adventist church. Since then she has sung for several weddings, funerals, birthday parties, churches, and was even given the opportunity to sing the National Anthem for 10,000 people at the Tacoma Dome for the All-State Wrestling Tournament. That same day she was crowned Sequim Irrigation Festival Queen.

In August of this year she will be going to Los Angeles to stay with a CBS music producer for a week. Not only will she be meeting some if the biggest and best in the business, but will also be staying with Al & Tracy Emery the managers for Faith Hill & Tim McGraw. Hopefully this will help lead to her dream of being a country singer.  She has performed in Ann of Green Gables, the Wizard of Oz, Father of the Bride, For Heavens Sake, (an original play),  and played Golda in Fiddler on the Roof.

FDR - the President himself

BILL BAHRT - Bill and his wife, Joyce, are proud parents of 15 children, and have 31 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  Bill has been singing since 1949, when he took the lead in Trial by Jury in high school.  Since then he's been in more than 41 shows over the last 51 years, some professional but mostly amateur, including Oliver, Oklahoma!, Naughty Marietta, and Desert Song.  For PALOA, Bill appeared as Alfie in My Fair Lady and Horace Van deGelder in Hello, Dolly!. He has also been in several OTA shows. Bill is retired from Hanford Nuclear Site, and is planning on leaving with his wife on a two-year mission for his church.

July - the quietest - SAMANTHA MANWELL

Samantha is nine years old and will be going into the fourth grade at Fairview Elementary.  She's been performing with Sunshine Generation since she was three.  Her first "solo" appearance was at the "Night of Stars" where she won most popular act singing "Achy Breaky Heart" at age five.  She was a townsperson and flower girl for PALOA's Cinderella in 1999 and appeared in Sequim High School's Oklahoma! in 2000.  Her other interests include  playing piano and she also enjoys reading, soccer and listening to her CD collection! She is thrilled to be a part of Annie and would like to say thank you to all of those responsible for putting on this year's production. 

Meg - AMY MEYER
Amy Meyer, age 10, is in the 5th grade at Helen Haller Elementary in Sequim. She first appeared on stage at the age of 5 in a high school production of The Wizard of Oz in San Bernardino, California. She has been in three plays with Helen Haller's Note Launchers, most recently playing the lead in Once Upon a Lily Pad. Amy sang the National Anthem at this year's Kiddie Parade in Sequim. She loves to sing and is a member of the children's choir at church.

Bonnie - CARI LUSK

Cari is 11 years old and will be in the sixth grade at Olympic Christian School. She has always loved to sing and joined her first choir at 5. She has been in two musicals at Independent Bible Church: Words and Inside Out. She has been a member of the Olympic Girls' Choir for two years. Annie is her first PALOA production, and she is loving it! She likes swimming, rollerblading, hanging out with friends, watching movies and snuggling with her cats.

Pepper - the toughest - JENNIFER LANCHEROS
Jennifer, age 10, is a student at Greywolf Elementary in Sequim. She has performed in two Missoula Children's Theatre productions (Sleeping Beauty and Treasure Island) as well as several other stage performances.  In addition to participating in pageants, ads and commercials, Jennifer is active in many kinds of sports activities as well as drama and singing.   

Emmie - LAUREL NORRIS

Laurel Norris, age 12, has been in Sunshine Generation for the last 4 years, has been dancing with the Pioneer Dance Arts for 2 years, and has been attending school for the last 6 years (she's a 7th grader at Sequim Middle School). She has performed in Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, Hee Haw Hayride and Krazy Kamp, as well as playing The Artful Dodger in Sequim High School's Operetta of Oliver. She loves singing, acting, sports and reading. This is her first PALOA production.

Kate - the next to littlest - JENNY PETERSON
Jenny Peterson, age 11, is a 5th grade student at Mountain View Elementary in Port Townsend, Washington. She loves dance, singing, acting, playing piano & violin, takes ballet & contemporary dance, and sings in a children's choir. She was a munchkin in the performance of Wiz of the West with the Missoula Children's Theatre in Port Townsend in fall of 2000.

Duffy - the biggest - ABBY IRWIN

Abby, age 11 is a 6th grade student at Roosevelt Middle School in Port Angeles, Washington. She has been performing with the Sunshine Generation group for the past two years. She has a passion for music, playing piano, singing and dancing. Abby began dancing at 7 months old. She is an incredible friend and an outstanding daughter! She is the oldest of 5 children.

Tessie - the cry-baby - AMBER WIGFIELD

Amber, age 12, is a 6th grader at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles. She is involved in Sunshine Generation, and in 1997, played the lead in Santa Mouse, a Modesto, California, school production. Constantly dancing and singing, she is known by family & friends as "The Show Girl".

Sara - CORI LUMENS

Cori Lumens, age 14, is a PALOA veteran, having performed in last year's production of Anything Goes. A 4.0 student, she recently the "Choir Student of the Year" award at Roosevelt Middle School.  She has participated in solo adjudication for the last three years and has been selected for the North Olympic Peninsula Honor Choir for the last two years. Actively involved in dancing as well as singing, she is looking forward to being a freshman this fall at Port Angeles High School. 

Molly - the littlest - KATELYN WALLACE (not pictured)

Katelyn is the smallest and youngest of the orphans. She has been in Sunshine Generation since she was 3. She is now 7 years old and a veteran of talent shows and ballet. She was dancing before she was walking, and has danced and sung at native functions and entertained at several Pow Wows with the Lower Elwha Tribe.  Annie is her first organized production.

ANNIE - Production Team

Production Manager - Jeff Hall

This is Jeff's fourth involvement in a PALOA production. He played Squire Dapp (Lancelot's second) in Camelot, helped construct sets for the King & I, and designed/supervised the set construction for Cinderella. Jeff is also a former PALOA Board member. Jeff & his wife Robin (our choreographer) met on the stage at Peninsula College, cast as the young lovers in Moliere's Imaginary Invalid. Living in Sequim with his seven children, he is thoroughly absorbed with theater and working with kids. Jeff is the Head Coach and President of the Sequim Youth Football Association (Wolfpups). He designed the sets for the past seven Sequim High School Operettas Little Mary Sunshine, Music Man, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Singing in the Rain, Oklahoma!, and this year Oliver! He is a founding member of Peninsula Family Theater, based in Sequim.

 

Stage Director - Geri Schmitt
Geri has been a resident of Port Angeles for 19 years, and brings 25 years of theatre experience to PALOA. She has served the Methodist Church as a Diaconal Minister where she has directed the music and theatre ministry in presentation of thirteen production including Peter Pan, The Curious Savage, Down to Earth, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and many others.

Geri has taught music and drama in Caldwell, Idaho where she has directed her high school choirs in presentations of South Pacific, Calamity Jane, Once Upon a Mattress, Lil' Abner and The Red Mill.

Her Masters degree in Music Education includes study in opera under Dr. Stanley Chapple at the University of Washington where she worked in production of three Mozart operas: Cosi Fan Tutti, Don Giovanni and Marriage of Figaro.

She has appeared in Boise, Idaho productions as Guinevere in Camelot, Irene Malloy in Hello, Dolly and Fruma Sara in Fiddler on the Roof.

She is married to Loren Schmitt, retired Superintendent of Schools in Manning, Idaho. They have one daughter, Susan, who teaches in the Neah Bay school System.

 

 

 

Choral Director - Katie Lenoue

Katie Lenoue has been a resident of the Peninsula for 16 years.  She and her husband Bernie moved here after graduation from Western Washington University.  Katie has taught music both privately and publicly.  Many of her private students have won awards locally and nationally. She was also the Director of Worship at Independent Bible Church for 5 years, where she directed many musical dramas.  Currently, Katie is teaching choir at Roosevelt Middle School.  She is also the assistant director for the Olympic Girls' Choir.  Both Katie and her husband have been involved with past PALOA productions, and she is excited about this new opportunity to work with the cast of Annie.

 


Choreographer - Robin Hall
This is Robin's forth PALOA production. She was choral director for Anything Goes. She played the stepsister Joy in Cinderella and was the Children's Choral Coordinator for The King & I. Robin is the Area Director for Sunshine Generation, Children's Performing Group and a founding partner of Peninsula Family Theater. She has acted in numerous high school and college theatre productions and has been musical director and choreographer for many shows as well. In 1990, Robin was named best supporting actress in a musical by the U.S. Army FORSCOM (forces Command) for her work in the Fantasticks. Robin is a native of Sequim who graduated from Sequim High School and Peninsula College. She lives in Sequim with her husband and their seven children. 



Orchestra Director - Dewey Ehling

Dewey was born on a wheat farm, one section of land, that his grandfather and grandmother homesteaded upon their arrival from Germany in 1880. After attending a one-room  country school for six years, and a small junior high and high school for six more years, he enrolled in Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas to study his first love, music. After receiving his degree in music, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a bandsman, playing the oboe. After four years he was released from active duty after attained the rank of Captain. In 1968, he went to Alaska to teach school. He lived there for 18 years, having taught at the junior high school level, the college level and finally completed his career in Alaska retiring as the Director of Music for the Anchorage School District. Since living in Port Angeles, he has conducted five PALOA productions, including Pirates of Penzance, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific and Brigadoon. Next season he will begin his eleventh season as musical director and conductor of the Peninsula Chamber Singers and his seventh season as musical director and conductor of the Port Townsend Community Orchestra. He and Lauretta enjoy this community and the Olympic Peninsula a great deal. They have lived here since 1986.

Hair & makeup - Chetta Wallace

Chetta joined PALOA's team in 1998 as makeup and hair designer for The King & I. She also returned for Cinderella and Anything Goes. She owns and runs Chetta's Academy of Hair and Nails in Port Angeles., which keeps her very busy. She is trained and is an instructor in Cosmotology. She also worked as a makeup artist for Seattle Opera production for one year, after participating in a theater makeup class. This is her fourth year making us look great.






Assistant Choreographer - Gavin McLean
A veteran of many theatrical productions from Sequim High School, to OTA and PALOA, Gavin has experience in dance, singing, acting and now takes on the role of Assistant Choreographer for Annie, as well as playing the Part of Rooster.

Assistant Production Manager / Stage Manager - Amanda Surgeon

Amanda has been in church musicals and skits with her friends since 2nd grade. She has just finished her 1st year at Northwest College in Kirkland, working toward a degree in Music Education, with a minor in Missions, and a certificate in TESL. (teaching English as a second language.) Her theatre credits include Lumiere in Beauty & the Beast in 1995; Diana's mother in Ann of Green Gables, and Stage Manager for The Sound of Music in 1997; Stage Manager for Fiddler on the Roof in 1998; Lights and stagehand for Singin' in the Rain, and stagehand for Cinderella in 1999; and Stage Manager for Oklahoma! in 2000.




Costume Designer - Christy Rutherford
Christy has been involved in community theater since she was a teenager and on the peninsula since she moved here in 1990.  Since then, she has produced and directed over 20 major musical productions.  She has designed costumes for dozens of productions and has worked on virtually every aspect of theater from behind the scenes and on stage.  She is the mother of eleven beautiful children and grandmother to eight.  Besides visiting with her children and grandchildren in her spare time (which is rare) she loves to sew, go for walks, read and sleep.

Sound Designer - David Link

This is David's fourth year with PALOA, having designed the sound for our last three shows, Cinderella, The King & I, and Anything Goes. He has also provided the sound design for Sequim High School's operettas for the last several years. David ran the sound system at the Sequim Presbyterian Church for six years, amplifying the Sequim Irrigation Festival and other events held there. David works at Olympic RV. His hobbies include fixing things and photography.

 

Scenic Concept Designer - Gay Whitman

Lighting Designer  - Bill Stuber

Bill has been involved in all aspects of production on a professional level for over twenty-five years, in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Denver and Seattle. His previous experience with PALOA is as lighting designer for Camelot, Cinderella and Anything Goes. He has also done lighting and sound work for Centrum in Port Townsend and the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts. Bill's other interests include music, photography, writing and poetry, and he has had three books of poetry and one nonfiction book published.

Assistant to the Stage Director - Carol King
A native of Washington, Carol has resided in Port Angeles for 25 years. She is employed in the office of Angeles Plumbing.
Annie is her first association with PALOA. She has experience in props and stage management through the theatre ministry of FUMC (First United Methodist Church) Productions, including A Christmas Carol and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and others.
