BRIGADOON
1993
The Story
BRIGADOON
Set in the Scottish Highlands, Brigadoon tells the story of two young American tourists, Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas, who become lost on a murky brae. They are both taken aback when, to the sound of distant voices (BRIGADOON), they suddenly see a village, shrouded in mist, where moments before there was no village at all.
In Brigadoon, it is market day (DOWN ON MacCONNACHY SQUARE) and the townspeople are out to sell --like Archie Beaton who runs the plaid stall, Angus McGuffie with his farm goods, and lively Meg Brockie with her cream pails --and to buy, like the MacLaren Family, father Andrew, and his daughters Jean and Fiona.
Today is Jean MacLaren's wedding day; she is to be wed to Charlie Dalrymple. Unfortunately, the happy event is clouded by Harry Beaton, who is also in love with Jean and is angry with Charlie for stealing his girl away. Meg, who would marry the first man who asked her, cannot understand why Fiona is not married. Fiona explains that she is content to wait (WAITIN' FOR MY DEARIE) for the right man to come along.
As Tommy and Jeff make their way into the village square, they are surprised to see the quaint native costumes and the antiquated stalls of food and drink. When they try to buy some milk, their money is not recognized by any of the villagers. Fiona and the others welcome the two strangers. Meg enthusiastically latches on to Jeff, while Fiona offers to show Tommy around the village. Charlie Dalrymple, however, explains to Tommy and Jeff that today is the end of his keeping company with young women (I'LL GO HOME WITH BONNIE JEAN). Today he must sign the family bible in the traditional way and tonight he will be married.
Tommy grows increasingly fond of Fiona, and together they go off to gather heather for the wedding (THE HEATHER ON THE HILL). In the meantirne, Jeff is led off by Meg to a little cottage. As the wary Jeff tries to take a nap, Meg entertains him with the story of her life (THE LOVE OF MY LIFE).
Later that day at the MacLaren house, Jean is getting ready to leave her house (JEANNIE'S PACKIN' UP). Charlie comes to sign the Bible and, although he cannot see Jean before their wedding, he sings to her from under her window (COME TO ME, BEND TO ME).
Fiona and Tommy return with the heather and Jeff reappears in a good mood after his nap. Both he and Tommy seem to have light hearts (IT'S ALMOST LIKE BEING IN LOVE): Brigadoon is almost too good to be true. Tommy spies the family bible and discovers the date Charlie has written as the day of the wedding is May 24, 1746. Tommy asks Fiona for an explanation, and she takes him and Jeff to see Mr. Lundie, the school master. What he says to them is stranger than anything else they might have expected. It seems the town's minister, disturbed by the evil influence of the outside world, asked God "to make Brigadoon an ' all the people in it vanish into the Highland mist. Vanish, but not for always. It would return jus' as it was for one day every hundred years. The people would go on leadin' customary lives; but each day when they awakened it would be a hundred years later." No villager is allowed to leave, Mr. Lundie adds, for that would break the spell, and Brigadoon would disappear forever, but a stranger could remain, if he fell in love.
After the wedding Harry Beaton, brokenhearted over his
loss, decides to leave Brigadoon and deliberately break the spell. To prevent him from doing so, the villagers chase after him, and Jeff trips him. Harry falls against a rock and dies.
After the chase, Tommy tells Fiona he loves her (THERE BUT FOR YOU GO I) and he makes up his mind to stay in Brigadoon. Tommy tells Jeff of his decision to stay. Jeff tells Tommy that he has accidentally killed Harry .Shaken by the accident and the role Jeff played in it, Tommy is convinced by his friend that Brigadoon is nothing more than a dream, and he decides to return to New York. As the day ends, Tommy says goodbye to Fiona (FROM THIS DA YON).
Back in New York, Tommy realizes that he cannot live without Fiona. He convinces Jeff to return with him to Scotland and the place where they found Brigadoon. As they stand in the mist, the singing is heard (BRIGADOON -reprise) again and the bridge that leads to the town reappears. Mr. Lundie calls out to Tommy, "My, my! Ye must really love her! Ye woke me up!" As he and Tommy walk across the bridge into the mist, Mr. .Lundie tells him "Ye shouldn't be too Surprised, lad. I told ye when ye love someone deeply anything is possible."
