CAMELOT
1996
THE STORY. Copyright 1962 by Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Loewe
The court is agog with expectation as Guenevere, soon to be queen, arrives at Camelot. But Arthur is nervous and afraid, so upset at the idea of marriage that it takes Merlyn to oust him from the tree in which he has been hiding. Guenevere is just as unhappy as she plaintively asks St. Genevieve Where are the simply joys of maidenhood ?
But their doubts are resolved when they meet each other, and
together they plan for a new high order of chivalry -The Knights of the Round
Table. News of this noble order spreads rapidly and Lancelot travels far from
his native France to cast his lot with King Arthur.
Lancelot makes plenty of enemies, however, because of the freedom with which he admits his many virtues. The other knights call it boasting. Lancelot, on the other hand, feels he has to tell the truth. So great is his unpopularity that Guenevere actively sponsors Sir Dinadan, Sir Sagramore, and Sir Lionel against Lancelot in the great tournament. He unhorses them all and Sir Lionel is killed by Lancelot's spear.
Yet Sir Lionel is brought back to life through Lancelot's prayers, and Queen Guenevere begins to fall in love with Lancelot, even as he is drawn to her. Both fight this attraction because of their mutual love for King Arthur. But both finally have to admit their hopeless love for each other.
In the meantime, Arthur's illegitimate and evil son, Mordred, has arrived at the castle to stir up ~iscord and to plot King Arthur's downfall and disgrace so that he can seize the inheritance. He convinces Arthur to stay in the forest for one night. He then surprises Lancelot and Guenevere together and arrests them for treason. Lancelot escapes but Guenevere is sentenced to be burned at the stake.
Lancelot rescues her at the last moment, however, and the wretched Arthur prepares to go to war, his hopes for a world of peace and goodwill crumbling. B ut he sees hope and success for the future in the aspirations of a young lad and bids him tell the story of Camelot so that it may inspire future generations.
