Synopsis
The plot deals with two love affairs. Nathan Detroit, a gambler, and Miss Adelaide, a nightclub singer and dancer, have been engaged for fourteen years, but every time Adelaide tries to get Nathan to set the wedding date, he keeps postponing it because he is involved in a series of floating crap games. He has no trouble organizing the games, but he constantly has to search for a new place-such as the back of a schoolhouse, a garage, or a room behind a bar-because Lieutenant Brannigan keeps trying to break up the gambling racket. The second love story concerns Sky Masterson, a much bigger gambler than Nathan, and Miss Sarah Brown, one of the workers at the "Save a Soul Mission."
In order to promote a new crap game, Nathan, who is desperately trying to raise $1,000 to pay for a place to hold the game, finally maneuvers Sky Masterson into betting that he can get a date with any girl Nathan selects. When Nathan picks Sarah Brown, Sky knows the odds are against him. Nevertheless, to win the bet, he goes to the Mission, finds that it is in danger of being closed, and offers to bring Sarah a whole flock of penitent sinners if she will go to dinner with him. Sarah finally agrees, although she doesn't understand why Sky wants to go to Havana for dinner. In Havana, Sky tricks the unsuspecting Sarah into drinking a native concoction made with Bacardi; thinking it is a flavored milk drink, Sarah keeps reordering, gets high and even becomes entangled in a brawl when another girl tries to dance with Sky, who finally drags the belligerent Sarah outside. By the time they return to New York, Sarah and Sky have fallen in love; but when they get to the Mission at about 4:00 A.M., Sarah discovers that Nathan's floating crap game had been held there while she was away and that Sky had taken her to Havana only to win a bet.
At the end of the first act, the love affair of Sky and Sarah, and the marriage of Adelaide and Nathan seem doomed.
In Act II, the floating crap game is again in full swing, this time in an underground sewer. At the height of the game, Sky arrives and inveigles every man present to make a fantastic bet. If Sky loses, he will pay each man $1,000; but if he wins, every loser will have to attend the prayer meeting at the Mission House. Of course, he wins.
In the next scene, set in the street near the Mission, the grumbling losers are moaning about having to go to the prayer meeting. Adelaide meets Nathan and asks him where he is going. When he tells her he has to attend a meeting at the Mission, Adelaide becomes infuriated, saying that that is the worst lie he has ever told her.
At the prayer meeting the gamblers, under pressure, begin giving testimony and reveal that Sky has lost his bet about being able to date any girl Nathan picked. Sarah rushes out to find Sky but meets Adelaide instead. She assures Adelaide that Nathan actually has attended the prayer meeting. The two unhappy girls then decide that they will have to try a new plan of attack if they want to marry the men - the idea being to get the men to the altar first and start the reformation afterward.
The final scene brings both love stories to a happy conclusion. Sky not only marries Sarah but also joins the Mission Workers, and Nathan and Adelaide are on their way to the Mission where their wedding ceremony will be performed.
