MUSIC MAN
1987

Synopsis

Harold Hill, a traveling salesman and con man, makes his living selling band instruments and uniforms. ..and then conveniently disappearing with the money before the instruments or his promised lessons are delivered.

The time is the Fourth of July , 1912, and the place is River City, Iowa. Hill gets caught in his web of lies by the librarian, Marian Paroo, who has a sharp eye for swindlers. However, the joy expressed by her fellow townspeople and her little brother -in anticipation of the band instruments, deters her from exposing him. She forces "Professor" Hill to stay and teach the use of the band instruments to River City's young people -even though he cannot read a note of music. Hill had courted Marian The Librarian as a strategic maneuver in his scheme, but, as fate will have it, he falls in love with her.

When the "band" is finally ready for its first public appearance, the results are disastrous. But, all's well that ends well, since the doting parents are oblivious to the cacophony; to their somewhat prejudiced tastes, it is music from heaven.

The hit song of MUSIC MAN is the famous "76 Trombones" sung by Harold Hill. The ballad "Till There Was You" is the popular love song performed by the two romantic leads. And, the barbershop quartet sings a rousing rendition of "Lida Rose."

The original production of MUSIC MAN starred Robert Preston and played on Broadway for 1,375 performances.
